Tree Plan for Tairua

There has been wide community input and consultation to produce a Tairua Tree Master plan.  These plans identify trees that contribute to Tairua's character and ensure certain species are used for all future plantings. This unifies areas of town, and serves to embrace and enhance local character.

Trees that do best are coastal NZ trees and Australian tree species due to Tairua's sandy soils and exposure to prevailing winds.  TCDC state that waterfront views are an important factor to consider when implementing the tree plan and in some cases trees may need to be planted between property boundaries or smaller growing trees selected to retain these views.

Trees on Council land that are known to have historic significance shall be placed on a Historic Tree register so they can be replaced with the same species should they require removal or replacement due to damage.

TCDC's Suggested 10 Year Tree Planting Programme considers the following locations:
Tairua School (Former)Carpark, Main town area, Northern Entranceway and Manaia Road.

Recommended natives for these areas include Kauri, Rewarewa, Totara, Puriri, Pohutukawa (and varieties), Puka, Nikau Palm, Kowhai and White Rata.

Tairua Business Profile: The Cyprus Tree

In its fourth summer of operation, The Cyprus Tree Tairua has become a favoured waterfront venue for Tairua winers and diners.  Proprieter Kim Mitchell established The Cyprus Tree in August 2004.  The Italian-inspired menu offers pizza and pasta as well as a tantalising selection of regional Italian dishes.  Specialising in quality ingredients, The Cyprus Tree has developed a consistent reputation for good food and service.  What makes The Cyprus Tree special?  Kim says; "The team.  They consistently give the best they can in terms of service, food and creating an atmosphere."  Kim's intention for The Cyprus Tree has been to create a place where people can appreciate the natural environment whilst enjoying a good atmosphere and consistently good food.  We think she's done exactly that.

$20 Pizza and Pint nights are held every Thursday from 5pm.  The Cyprus Tree is open throughout Easter and is now taking bookings for winter functions.

Mercury Bay Art Escape 7-10 March

Need a reason to spend the weekend in Tairua in March?  The Mercury Bay Art Escape on 7-10 March promises to be an enriching event for all Coromandel Peninsula art fans.  The aim of the occasion is to emphasise the artistic contributions of the Mercury Bay area.  Visit artists in their studios from Tairua/Whenuakite, Hahei, Whitianga, Kuatuonu and more.  Dinner and live entertainment from The Warratahs will be at Eggcentric Cafe on Friday 7th March and Cooks Beach Vineyard are hosting a "lazy Sunday afternoon" featuring local wine, musicians and food on Sunday 9th March.  Tairua artisans taking part in the event include Paula McNeil, Susan Dunster and Christine Hatton.  Visit http://www.mercurybayartescape.com/ for more info.
